about us
Our philosophy is based on using the best resources to care for your pet.
Traditional medicine, diagnostics and surgical treatments are offered along with complementary therapies of acupuncture, laser therapy, and chiropractic care to provide the best of both worlds. Our approach is effective, compassionate, and gentle, and our experienced staff is genuinely dedicated and caring.
Our founder, Barbara Calm started Calm Animal Care in a cabin up Truman Creek in 1984 and moved her office to Kila in 1985. Over the years, she and her associates have treated dogs, cats, and other pets as well as wildlife and livestock.
In 1997 Dr. Calm began exploring alternatives to traditional veterinary medicine, earning accreditation in veterinary acupuncture and in veterinary chiropractic, receiving referrals from other veterinarians all over Montana.
In 2025, Dr Calm’s two senior associates, Dr. Karen Hartle and Dr. Meg Gordon, took over ownership of the clinic and have continued the tradition of including options for care to fit the best interests of their patients. They bring extensive experience in internal medicine, soft tissue surgery, behavioral consultation, dentistry and selected orthopedic procedures. Dr Hartle has also completed training in veterinary acupuncture and is becoming proficient in animal chiropractic as well. Laser therapy has become another important part of the care that our doctors and staff provide for our patients.
Kari Gabriel became our office manager, in 2019. She quickly became an essential part of our team, facilitating connections among and between staff, clients, and outside vendors. Kari keeps the practice running smoothly. Wendy Haagerup leads the rest of the crew as she has with dedication to her work since 2004.
We are very proud of our support staff, and encourage their continuing education and ever expanding skills. We strive to provide the highest level of service, with state of the art equipment and the safest possible methods, continually updating our approach to match the current standard of veterinary care.
