about us

Our philosophy is based on using the best resources to care for your pet.

Traditional medicine, diagnostics and surgical treatments are offered along with complementary therapies of acupuncture, laser therapy, and chiropractic care to provide the best of both worlds. Our approach is effective, compassionate, and gentle, and our experienced staff is genuinely dedicated and caring.

From an early age, Barbara Calm has always had a strong love for animals. She knew early on that she wanted to dedicate her life to helping animals become well and stay healthy. She started Calm Animal Care in 1984 and moved her office to Kila in 1985. Over the years, Dr. Calm has treated dogs, cats, and other pets as well as wildlife and livestock.

In 1997 Dr. Calm began exploring alternatives to traditional veterinary medicine, earning accreditation in veterinary acupuncture and in veterinary chiropractic. While maintaining her diagnostic and surgical skills, Barbara now focuses mainly on these complementary options for treating your pets, receiving referrals from other veterinarians all over Montana.

Her two associates, Dr. Karen Hartle and Dr. Meg Gordon, both experienced veterinarians, handle other specialties for the clinic including medicine, soft tissue surgery, behavioral consultation, dentistry and selected orthopedic procedures.

Kari Gabriel replaced Belinda Jones, our longtime office manager, in 2019.  She quickly became an essential part of our team, facilitating connections among and between staff, clients, and outside vendors.  Kari keeps the practice running smoothly.

We are very proud of our support staff, and encourage their continuing education and ever expanding skills.  We strive to provide the highest level of service, with state of the art equipment and the safest possible methods, continually updating our approach to match the current standard of veterinary care.
